Refunds & cancellation
Last updated: September 18, 2026
This page says how to stop paying for The Margin, what happens to your work when you do, and when you can have your money back. It sits alongside the Terms of Service, which say the same thing in §6; if the two ever read differently, the Terms are the contract.
Cancelling
You can cancel at any time from your billing settings, without writing to anyone and without giving a reason. Cancelling stops the next renewal. It does not end the period you have already paid for: your plan keeps working until that period runs out, and the account then continues on the Free plan.
Nothing is deleted when a subscription ends. Your boards, notes, money and household records stay in the account, and the Free plan can read them. Some paid features stop, and where a plan's limits are lower than what you have, the excess becomes read-only rather than being removed.
Your legal right to cancel
If you are a consumer in the UK or the EU, the Consumer Contracts Regulations give you 14 days from the day you subscribe to change your mind, whatever our own policy says. Where you have asked us to start the service immediately and have used it during those 14 days, we may keep a proportionate amount for the part you used.
This right is yours by law and nothing on this page reduces it.
Our refund window
Beyond the legal minimum, we refund a first purchase in full within 14 days if the app is not what you expected. Write to [email protected] from the address on the account and say what went wrong. You do not have to argue for it.
After those 14 days, a subscription runs to the end of the period you paid for and is not refunded part-way, except where the law requires it or where we have charged you in error. We would rather you cancelled early than paid for months you are not using, which is why cancelling takes one click and no conversation.
Trials
A trial is free for its stated length and grants the plan you picked. Nothing is charged while it runs, and it does not turn into a paid subscription on its own — if you want to carry on after it ends, you choose a plan and pay for it.
Mistaken and duplicate charges
If you have been charged twice, charged after cancelling, or charged an amount that does not match the plan you chose, tell us and we will return it. This is not discretionary and it is not limited to 14 days.
How a refund reaches you
Refunds go back to the card or account that paid, through the same payment provider that took the money. We start ours within five working days of agreeing it; how long it then takes to appear is your bank's to decide, and is usually another few days.
The price and currency of your plan are shown on the pricing page and again at checkout before you pay. A refund is made in the currency you were charged in.
Taking your data with you
You can export everything at any time, on any plan, including the Free one. The export runs in your browser against the copy of your data already on your device, so it does not depend on a subscription being active and it is not something we can withhold. Leaving with your work intact is the point of the product, not a concession.
